From the Beginning

In 1917, the Utah Legislature passed a workers’ compensation act requiring all employers to have insurance for their employees. The system was established to protect both the employee and the employer from financial ruin that a workplace accident could cause.

Because workers’ compensation insurance was new to the entire country, policymakers in Utah debated how to best formulate its system. After much discussion, policymakers agreed that a state fund should be created to compete with insurance carriers. WCF Mutual Insurance Company, then known as the State Insurance Fund and later named Workers Compensation Fund, was established with a $40,000 loan from the state, which it repaid in 1922. Since then, WCF Mutual Insurance Company and its policyholders have seen many changes, but the company’s purpose and vision remain the same: to provide excellent customer service to its policyholders and their employees.

National Coverage

To better serve WCF Mutual Insurance Company's multistate customers, WCF Mutual acquired WCF National Insurance Company in 1998 to write workers' compensation outside Utah. Today, WCF National Insurance Company is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to offer workers’ compensation insurance. (Stop gap coverage is available in the monopolistic states.) WCF National Insurance Company has extensive experience, knowledge, and resources in many states and is an excellent resource on multistate or single state workers' compensation. WCF National maintains five claims offices in the western U.S.: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, and Utah. With a national scope built on personalized local service, our mission is to provide an excellent insurance experience for our customers and stakeholders.
